The Challenge

At SXSW Sydney 2024, Dell Technologies needed to do more than show up on a crowded expo floor. With more than 10,000 attendees from over 40 countries, the event gave Dell access to startups, small business owners and industry innovators, but also intense competition for attention.

The challenge was to create an activation strong enough to make people stop, engage and willingly share information. Dell needed a branded merchandise experience that could drive booth traffic, capture qualified leads and create visibility beyond the stand itself.

By centering the activation on a personalized stainless-steel water bottle, Dell turned a useful product into a reason to participate. By day two, the bottles were visible throughout the expo.

The Solution

Dell’s branded merchandise partner built the activation around a premium 500 ml double-wall stainless-steel vacuum bottle in Dell’s brand colors.

Attendees completed a mobile pre-survey with opt-in consent, giving Dell verified contact information and insight into company size, role and business needs. They then submitted a personalization form, and their bottle was engraved live with their name or initials.

The wait became part of the strategy: attendees were directed to Dell’s educational stand sessions, and pickup created a second face-to-face interaction with staff. With the engraving station positioned at the front of the stand, production became promotion. When demand peaked, the team offered next-day pickup and replenished inventory daily from a local warehouse.

Personalized Product

A premium stainless-steel bottle in Dell’s brand colors gave attendees a useful item worth engaging for. Live engraving made the product feel personal and specific.

Lead Capture Flow

Before receiving a bottle, attendees completed a mobile pre-survey with opt-in consent, giving Dell verified contact information plus insight into role, company size and business needs.

Built-In Engagement

The engraving wait time directed attendees into educational sessions, while pickup created a second staff interaction. Placing the station up front turned production into booth promotion.

Results

Dell’s SXSW Sydney activation turned one personalized product into a measurable event marketing engine.

The program generated 1,355 qualified, opted-in leads, attracted 6,000+ booth visitors and achieved a $17.80 (AUD) cost per lead. Its success came from making the bottle worth the action required to receive it.

Attendees completed a survey, submitted a personalization form, waited for live engraving, attended stand sessions and returned for pickup – creating five separate engagement points with Dell. The premium bottle also extended brand visibility across the expo floor, while the front-facing engraving station turned the production process into promotion that drew in additional passersby.
